Make Money at Home with Small Scale Business

The idea of having a home based business offers independence and freedom.  Some people were least fortunate to enroll in college due to economic or financial difficulties. You can still earn money even though you were not able to acquire high level of education (collage degree and/or post-graduate degree).

You can create a business from your technical knowledge and earn income at home.   Here are some businesses which can be created from technical knowledge:

Dress or Tailoring Shop

Dressmaking and tailoring are vocations that required a sewing machine to render such services.  If you have some knowledge of making dresses, trousers, coats, gowns, etc. you can earn money from this vocation.

If you turn a cloth into children's, women's and men's clothings (like skirts, blouses, dresses, pants, shorts, shirts), you can convert a space in your house and create a dress-shop or tailoring shop of your own.  You are the boss and earn money at home.

Parlor or Barber Shop

Cosmetology is a vocation where you can earn for a living at home. There are women who go to a beauty salon and men go to barber shop to trim their hair, clean their nails (manicure), clean their finger toes (pedicure). shampoo or dye their hair and seek personal assistance to put make-up on them specially for special occasion. 

If you knowledge in cosmetology services, you can create a parlor, barber shop in your home or offer cosmetology services to earn money.  Some people call for a home cosmetology service or barber and pay for a fee higher than the usual rate. 

Here are some of the legitimate small scale business ideas to make money and does not require much capitalization to start with:

Banana-cue Stand

Banana cue is made of deeply fried Saba coated in caramelized brown sugar. It is a popular street snack food in the Philippines.  Two pieces of Saba bananas are skewed on a bamboo stick for ease serving and are sold at P10.00 per stick.

Materials Needed:

Semi ripe or Ripe Saba banana varietyVegetable Cooking Oil1/4 cup brown sugar for every 16pieces of Saba bananaBamboo Sticks (a stick per 2 pieces of Saba banana)Large wok12 inches size Fry Skimmer Strainer and a Cooking Stove

How to cook banana cue?

- Drop the bananas in a large wok  at high frame heat cooking oil to fry until the bananas start to slightly brown.- Sprinkle the brown sugar and let is stand. Start stirring the bananas when the brown sugar starts to caramelized.- Continue frying and stirring the bananas until fully coated with the caramelized sugar. Turn off the heat to avoid overcooking.-Remove the caramelized coated bananas from the wok and drain them in the fry skimmer strainer to remove excess oil.-Strew two bananas in every bamboo stick while slightly cooled down.-That's it. The banana cue is ready for selling.

The banana cue stand can be a home-based business. The banana cue business can be done in a supermarket or mall. You need to pay the supermarket or mall owner for the space fee.  

Grilled Isaw

Grilled Isaw is also a popular street food from the Philippines which is made from barbecued pig ears, intestines or chicken intestines.  The intestines are cleaned, turned inside out and cleaned again. The pig or chicken intestines are stewed on a bamboo stick before being grilled.

Materials Needed:

For grilled pig ears:
250 grams pork ears (pre-boiled until slightly tender), slice into cubes1 head crushed garlic1/4 cup soy sauce1 piece laurel leaves1 teaspoon crushed black pepper1/8 cup vinegar

For grilled chicken intestines:
500 grams cleaned chicken intestines1 head crushed garlic1/2 cup soy sauce3 pieces laurel leaves1 tablespoon crushed black pepper1/4 cup vinegar

For grilled pork intestines:
500 grams cleaned, sliced  pork intestines1 head crushed garlic1/2 cup soy sauce3 pieces laurel leaves1 tablespoon crushed black pepper1/4 cup vinegar

For vinegar dipping sauce:
1 1/2 cup white vinegar1 head crushed garlic1 piece chopped red onion4 pieces chillies4 pieces calamansi, juiced1 tbsp fish sauce1 tbsp white sugar

Pre-cooking procedure:

In a pan, add garlic, soy sauce, laurel leaf, crushed black pepper to the intestines. Add vinegar when the mixture boils and reduce the heat to low.  Allow to simmer than stir and turn the fire off.  It the pre-cook intestines cool.

Skew the cool pork or chicken intestines on bamboo sticks.
Grill the pork or chicken intestines to pre-heated grill. You can add the cooled mixture with a paint brush to the pork or chicken intestines while grilling. Cook  until brown but not burned.

Palamig (Juice) Beverage Stall

Some of the famous refreshing drinks you'll find along the street stalls are Melon, Buko Juice, Pineapple Juice.  One of the most famous and all-time favorite of Filipinos is Palamig.  It is a refreshing drink during summer in the Philippines.

How to make Palamig?

1  sachet gelatin powder
3 cups brown sugar
1 tbsp vanilla extract
2 to 3 cups water


  1. Cook the gelatin according to package instructions. Set aside;
  2. In a cooking pot, place the brown sugar on the lowest heat possible.  Add water and vanilla extract when the brown sugar starts to dissolves and caramelize. Note:  use the lowest heat possible to avoid the sugar to burn;
  3.  In a glass, combine some sliced gelatin, 3 tablespoons of caramelized sugar and a cup of cold water. Stir;
  4.  Your Palamig is ready for sell or serve.

Food Stand Stall 

There are other variety of food stuffs you can sell just in-front of your house like arroz-caldo, pancit, sandwiches, siopao, puto, kutsinta, and even fruits.

Water Re-filling Station

Some people can't afford to purchased their water purifier. You can convert the frontage of you house into a Water Re-filling Station and sell drinking water to those who can't afford to purchased their water purifier and anyone.

Master Key Duplication Business

Some people need extra keys for what they are already have. Master Key Duplication business can also be done home-based.  

Stamp Marker Making Business

Offices, teachers, kids and some crafters  need stamp markers. You only need a sharp cutter, rubber stamp, wooden handle, rugby, a pencil marker and a board to start a stamp marker making business at home.

Art and Jewelry Craft

If you are articulate and creative, you can convert waste materials like paper, magazine, plastic shopping bags, plastic drinking bottles, straws, bottle caps into art or jewelry craft. You can sell your crafts online with etsy.com, ebay.com and other e-commerce store online.

Lease Out/Boarding Space

If you got an unused space at home, say storage, you can disposed you unused stuffs and convert your storage into a boarding space. There are people who are looking for a space to stay near their school or work place to save time and sometimes transportation costs.   You can earn money from board space rental converting your unused space at home. 


If you are good in knitting, you can earn money making stuff toys, knitted socks, mittens, bracelets and many more.
