What are Search Engines?


Search engines search for documents and information such as websites, individual web pages, posts, images, videos, documentaries and etc for a specified keywords or words used on the World Wide Web (WWW).


The Search Engines that are current and active in the Internet are: 


AOL Search known as AOL.com is an American multinational mass media corporation based in New York, a subsidiary of Verizon Communications, owns and operates websites (The Huffington Post, TechCrunch and Engadget, and spans digital distribution of content, products, and services which offers to consumers, publishers and advertisers.   Originally known as America Online stylized as AoL.


AskJeeves-Ask Jeeves, more correctly known as Ask.com, is a search engine founded in 1996 in California. It is notable for having one of the most well-known gimmicks among search engines.  AskJeeves is a provided by the titular Jeeves character; a stereotypical English butler who would "fetch" the answer to any question asked. Ask.com is the #1 question answering service that delivers the best answers from the web and real people all in one place.


Baidu.com Baidu, Inc., incorporated on January 18, 2000, is a Chinese web services company headquartered at the Baidu Campus in Beijing's Haidian District. Baidu offers many services, including a Chinese search engine for websites, audio files and images
Daum.net is a web portal in South Korea, like Naver and Nate. Daum offers many Internet services to web users, including a popular free web-based e-mail, messaging service, forums, shopping and news.


Dogpile.com is a search engine created by InfoSpace and powered by Metasearch technology.  It searches for information on the World Wide Web that fetches results from Google, Yahoo! And Yandex.  Dogpile looks at each search engine and decides which are most relevant to your search, eliminates duplicates and reveals them to you.  You’ll get a list of results more complete that anywhere else on the Web.   


Exalead.com is a software company, created in 2000 in Paris, France by Francois Bourdoncle. Excite.com is a collection of websites, featuring world-class search content.  It offers a variety of content including an Internet portal showing news, weather, metasearch engine, a web-based email, instant messaging, stock quotes and a customizable personalized user’s hompage.   


GenieKnows.com is a Canadian Incorporation, privately owned vertical search engine company. It is the corporate home for it’s company products and services.  You’ll find links to everything they are working on and hints at what might be coming soon.    


Gigablast.com is a small independent and new search engine based in New Mexico, founded in 2000 by Matt Wells.   The search engine source code is written in the programming languages C and C+ +.  Gigablast supports various specialized searches that feature Giga Bits and blog-search feature.


Google.com is the best search engine in the world.


HotBot.com was one of the first Internet search engines which was founded in May, 1996 by Wired magazine.  It is a meta-search engine for information on the World Wide Web currently owned by Lycos.
Info.com is meta-search engine which provides results from leading search engines and pay-per-click directories, including Google, Yahoo!, Bing.com, Ask, Look Smart, About and Open Directory.


Ixquick.com is the world’s most private search engine that provides search results from over ten best search engines in full privacy.


Lycos.com is a search engine and a web portal established in 1994.  It offers search, free online games, e-mail, build free websites, videos & movies, news, weather


MSN Search known as Bing.com is a web portal and a customizable collection of the best in new, sports, FLA, Internet services, apps for Windows and Mobile devices provided by Microsoft.  

Sogou.com is a subsidiary of Sohu, Inc. founded on 9 August 2010. It is the owner and developer of Sogou search engine, Sogou Input and Sogou browser.


WebCrawler.com is an Internet bot and a product of InforSpace that offers combined search results from Google, Yahoo! Bing and Ask in the Internet for images, videos and news.
Yandex.com is a Russian Multinational technology company specializing in Internet-related services and products.  It provides answers to any questions users have or thing about.


Yahoo.com is among the list of most popular free email providers and globally known for its web portal search engine Yahoo! Search, Directory, Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! News, Yahoo! Finance, Yahoo! Groups, Yahoo! Answers, advertising, online mapping, video sharing, fantasy sports and its social media website.
